RAR

A beautiful small-scale project by the famous Catalan winemaker Ricard Rofes (responsible for the wines of Scala Dei) and his wife Magda Pellicer, started in 2011. 'Rar' means something like unique and exceptional in Catalan, and these letters are also Ricard's initials. A spectacular winery, situated at an altitude of about 500 meters in the heart of the cult appellation Priorat, about 50 kilometers southwest of Barcelona. The grapes of this couple grow under perfect conditions: steep vineyards with typical 'llicorella' soil (very poor soil consisting mainly of slate and quartz) and the vines are quite old (between 30 and 90 years old). The wines excel in balance and finesse. The garnacha (grenache) dominated red Priorat is wonderfully juicy and pure, full of flawless red fruit. The white Priorat (composed of garnacha blanca and macabeo) is pure and balanced, with notes of citrus and a stony minerality.
