Barbaresco Riserva 'Pora' 2020
Barbaresco Riserva 'Pora' 2020
Sourced from the 'Pora' vineyard. After a 28-day skin maceration, it matured for 36 months in large, used Slavonian oak barrels, followed by another 12 months in the bottle at the producer's. The Pora is a wine with opulent fruit notes of raspberry and plum, spices like licorice and star anise, dried flowers, and often an earthy undertone reminiscent of truffle. A relatively smooth wine with a medium body and slightly softer tannins that mature fairly quickly in the bottle. It can easily be cellared for 20 years.

According to many wine enthusiasts, this collaboration of 56 winemakers is considered one of the best cooperatives in the world. They are praised for their very high and consistent quality, all for relatively very reasonable prices.
First established at the end of the 19th century, and (after a closure forced by the fascists) re-established in 1958. They now own over 100 hectares of vineyards in beautiful locations, especially in the immediate vicinity of the village of Barbaresco.
They have an ingenious system to motivate all their members to go all out for quality. For example, members are not allowed to keep their best fruit to make their own wine; everything goes to the cooperative. And if high quality is delivered, the farmer in question receives a factor on the price per kilo. Quality over quantity, in other words.
However, in good years, the cooperative also produces nine different Barbaresco Riservas (separate bottlings from one specific vineyard). All from vineyards in the immediate vicinity of the village of Barbaresco, while Barbaresco DOCG as a wine region is much larger and also includes other villages.
Outside of Burgundy, this is very rare to our knowledge: nine 'single-vineyard' expressions of one grape variety, one producer, and one vintage...
