Bell Cros, 2020

The Deal 2020

The Deal 2020

In 2017, Peter van Bell Cros bought his first vineyard in Montsant from Joan and Maria. The deal was sealed with El Tracte, a traditional Catalan handshake to conclude a business deal. The vines are on average 40 years old, and after harvesting and fermentation, the wine is aged for 14 months in both used and new oak. The wine is intense with a red and dark blue color. Due to the oak aging and the Garnacha, it is firm and intense yet fresh and elegant on the palate with a long finish.

Meer over Bell Cros

Bell Cros is located high in Montsant, bordering Priorat. A relatively young winery, but with old vines! The quality of the vineyards is immense. Previously, it was a bit too high and cold here. Moreover, the vineyards were not protected by surrounding mountain ridges as in Priorat. But the changing climate has had its advantages here.

The first person to recognize this was winemaker Joan Asens. A man nicknamed "crac" - roughly translatable as genius - is, of course, a great asset. Born and raised next to the current estate, he knew the potential of these vineyards. For example, he was a consulting winemaker for Alvaro Palacios but did not have to think long about becoming the winemaker for Bell Cros.

2019 was his first year at Bell Cros, and in that same year, he was named winemaker of the year in Catalonia.
The white wines are made from Garnacha Blanca, and the red wines from Carinena and Garnacha.
