The monastery of Scala Dei was founded by Carthusian monks as early as 1184, and by 1263, written instructions on how to make the wines were already in place. The first and most important point: the wine must consist of Garnacha! Carignan may be used in small quantities. And this has never changed throughout all these centuries. Under the inspiring leadership of renowned winemaker Ricard Rofes, Scala Dei (the steps of God) still excels in elegance and terroir expression.
The vineyards of Scala Dei are the highest in Priorat and also very rich in the famous Licorella rock. These black schistes provide cooling instead of heating. If properly utilized, this unique soil type ensures freshness. Ricard Rofes works without chemical pesticides.
