Vigneti Massa, 2022

Timorasso Montecitorio 2022

Timorasso Montecitorio 2022

The Timorasso grape is the original variety of the Piedmontese Colli Tortonesi, which also includes Gavi di Gavi. This variety was very susceptible to disease and crop failure and was therefore almost extinct. Walter Massa has replanted this grape and his Timorasso wines are considered the best white wines of Piedmont. The 'Montecitorio' has the longest lifespan of his three cru vineyards. The wine has a light hint of honey, a delicate nutty aroma, and a slight pear/apricot combination. A truly magnificent wine that is almost impossible to buy outside of Italy.

Meer over Vigneti Massa

Walter Massa is one of Piedmont's leading winemakers. He makes beautiful wines from, among others, Barbera, but Massa's (inter-)national 'claim to fame' are his exceptional wines from the 'forgotten' and rare Timorasso grape, which have now achieved absolute cult status. Every year, at least one of his wines receives 'three glasses' in the Gambero Rosso.

His estate is located in the Colli Tortonesi, a hilly area just east of Alessandria on the border with Lombardy. However, the eccentric Walter chooses not to work with the DOC 'Colli Tortonesi' and therefore, entirely according to his own insights, only produces 'Vino Bianco' or 'Vino Rosso'.
